Detailed
Description
American Hebraica. Three part work consisting of novellae, responsa, and discourses by R. Judah Eliezer Anixter (c. 1829-1914). R. Anixter served as rabbi in Chicago and the Anixter family today is still a active in leadership roles in the Chicago Jewish community. The title page of Hiddushei Avi states that it comprised of three parts, novellae on gemarra, Rashi, and Tosafot גפ"ת entitled Hiddushei Avi, responsa entitled Teshuvot Avi, and discourses entitled Derash Avi, concluding with commentary and explanations on verses from the Torah called Ta’amei de-Kra. The author’s full name is given as Judah Eliezer Anixter, son of Isaac Izik Anixter, and אבי"י alludes to the author’s name, that of his father, and of his grandfather Judah. The title page is dated, “that you may live למען תחיון (664 = 1904), [and multiply, and go in] and possess [the land]” (Deuteronomy 8:1). There is a separate title page for each part, simply stating the contents of that part. Hiddushei Avi has approbations from R. Moses Bexalel Luria, R. Eleazer Simhah Rabbinowicz, R. Raphael Shapiro, and R. Jacob ben David Ridbaz. Next is the introduction of R. Anixter and then the novellae, starting with Berakhot and concluding with Sanhedrin, but also includes Niddah, which precedes it. The responsa section begins with a discussion of Gitten and Minhat Bekkuring, followed by the responsa. The last part, the discourses, are on various subjects, incluing charitym guests, bar mizvah, and festivals. The text is in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words which are in square letters.
