Play of the popular biblical figure Joseph, in Hebrew, often performed on Purim. The play starts with Joseph and his brothers, and includes his journey to Egypt, Joseph's sale in Egypt to Potiphar, his incarceration and appearance before the Pharaoh. The final act centers around Joseph's advise to the Pharaoh for salvation from the starvation during the upcoming seven years of hunger.

The play was authored Baermann of Limburg, German writer who lived at Frankfort-on-the-Main at the end of the seventeenth century and at the beginning of the eighteenth. He published the play (Frankfort-on-the-Main, 1712) in Judæo-German, with the Hebrew title "Mekirat Yosef" (The Sale of Joseph), destined for the Feast of Purim, which excited great interest. It was performed in Frankfort on the Feast of Purim, 1713, with much success, many Christians being present. The actors were Jewish students from Prague and Hamburg. The same comedy was acted at Metz, and became a favorite Purim play among the Polish Jews generally.
