Detailed
Description
Bibliographic limited edition of the 1726 Fuerth printing of part two of the Yiddish ethical verse entitled Simhat ha-Nefesh by R. Elhanan Kirchhan. This is the first edition of part two of Simhhat ha-Nefesh - part one was printed in 1707 – and can be considered an independent work, consisting primarily of poems and songs. This edition is in two parts, beginning with English and Yiddish title pages, a reproduction of the 1726 title page, introductory matter by Jacob Shatsky, Ph. D and bibliographic material, and the text of Simhat ha-Nefesh, all in square letters. The second part is a facsimile of the original 1726 edition, beginning again the title page and then the text, which includes musical notations. Also included is an original order sheet from the publisher describing the work on one side and a reproduction of the title page on the reverse side. Simhhat ha-Nefesh was a popular and much republished work.

R. Elhanan Kirchhan was an ethical writer who lived at Frankfort-on-the-Main at the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth. The eminent woman preacher Vögele der Maggid frequently referred to Simhhat ha-Nefesh, and Berthold Auerbach mentions it in his "Dichter und Kaufmann" (ed. 1855, p. 54). R. Kirhchhan occupied himself also with Biblical exegesis and published novellæ on the Pentateuch (Offenbach, 1722).
