Description
   Only edition of parts one and two of these halakhic novellae by R. Jacob Shalom ben Hayyim Sofer. The title page has a decorative border and very brief text, simply stating that it is Torat Hayyim on numbers 1 through 150 of Shulhan Arukh Orah Hayyim. There are approbations from R. Naphtali ben Mordeai Fischel and R. Zussman (Eliezer) ben (Mordecai Ephraim) Fischel Sofer. There is an introduction from the author, which includes the names of the individuals who assisted in financing publication. The text is in two columns in rabbinic type. On the final page the author’s name is given as J. L. Schreiber Rabbinats-Assesor der Oth. Gemeinde. The second volume is like the first, here encompassing numbers 150 through 202 of Orah Hayyim. Names of the sponsors of publication of this volume are given on the verso of the title page.

R. Jacob Shalom ben Hayyim Sofer was born in Bemering on 24 Heshvanm 612 (1852) but resided for most of his life in Budapest. He first served his father in the rabbinate but after was av bet din in Munkacz and Pest, relocating to the latter location when his father moved there. After his father’s death R. Sofer served as rabbi in Budapest. He died on 24 Elul 681 (1921). Torat Hayyim is his personal monument.
