Description Information
Only edition? iv, 5-29 pp., octavo, 179:120 mm., nice margins, light age staining. A very good copy bound in the original title wrappers.
First, and possibly only edition of this edition of Sefer ha-Lavanah, based on a manuscript in the British Museum (or. 630) and edited by A. W. Greenup. There is an introduction in English and then the text in Hebrew in a single column in square letters. The introduction describes the physical manuscript, and then summarizes the contents. It notes that the author, whose name is given as Hormus expresses familiarity with all the books of astrology, which he finds perplexing, but that the best is the Sefer ha-Lavanah, a hidden book not to be transmitted to any one. It includes twenty-eight directions for preparing zelamim based on the positions of the moon. Tehre are twelve directions for samim to used for good and evil, and three paragraphs on mazels, signs of the zodiac, and hours of trhe day. The alst section has a mystical alphabet drawn from Latin, which leads Greenup to the conclusion that the entire work is a translation of an ancient Latin astrological treatise.

Albert William Greenup (1866-1952) also published Midrash Lekav Tov on Song of Songs (1910); piyyutim of Mordecai ben Judah Dato (15251591/1601); Iggeret Hamudot, on the Kabbalah (1912); andparts of yalkut Makhiri (1909-13) as well as several other works.
