Detailed
Description
Thirty-one discourses by R. Zevi Hirsch ben Meir of Lissa. The title page states that they are based on the words of earlier sages which are not to be found and that all eyes desire to see. All that do see them say they are mine, mine. Replete with words of ethical instruction in the manner of understanding, and knowledge (Exodus 35:31). It advises that for all who acquire this book it will be as if they had purchased many books. The title page is dated, Open to me the gates (580 = 1820) righteousness; I will go into them, and I will praise the Lord (Psalms 118:19). There are approbations from R. Akiva Eger, R. Jacob Lauerbaum of Lissa, and R. Gedalia Lipshitz. The text is set intwo columns in rabbinic type with occasional material in square letters and some annotational inserts, also in rabbinic letters. The last discourse is on the well being of the monarchy, concluding with verse in praise of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. The volume ends with an apologia from the son of the author, the fathers blessing, and a four column listing of the individuals who financed publication, covering one and a half pages. At the bottom of the last page is and attractive woodcut.
