Description Information
First edition. [2], 36; 12 ff., octavo, 175:100 mm., usual light age staining and fraying. A good copy bound in modern half cloth boards.
Ethical work with kabbalistic content by R. Samuel ben Shalom. Torat ha-Adam is undated and lacks the place of printing. Based on the description in Hebrew Bibliographic Project this appears to be the first edition. At the top of the title page states, “Happy is the man who has not forgotten you, and the son of man who finds his strength in You.” The text states that it was written by the holy man of God. All who will look into it with open eyes will see how a person has to serve the Lord with a complete and perfect service in order to acquire true completion, for this is why man was created in this world. It further informs that the author, R. Samuel ben Shalom, is a grandson of R. Moses of Ostrog, author of Arugat ha-Bosum on the Song of Songs. The title page is followed by R. Samuel’s introduction, where he writes that he entitled the book Torat ha-Adam because it is how a person should conduct himself all the days of his life in this world. Next is the text in a single column in rabbinic type. Much of the text is taken from or influenced by the Mishnat Hasidim of R. Emanuel Hai Ricci. At the end of the volume has Ketav Yeshar, with its own title page and foliation. That work is described as part two of Torat ha-Adam.
