Detailed
Description
Unusual sheet with prayers to be recited before and after learning in Erez Israel. The header states that it is for that purpose to strengthen and support his hands in learning in the holy land. At the bottom of the page is a stylized woodcut of the Tiferes Israel synagogue, built in 1865 by Bak and his son Nissan. The synagogue was dedicated in 1872 and its roof was donated by the Austro-Hungarian Kaiser, Franz Joseph. It was destroyed in 1946. About the woodcut of the synagogue are, on the right side, that it was printed by Israel Bak. On the left side in bold print is Jerusalem followed by, in smaller letters, “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne” (Psalms 89:15). The prayer to be recited prior to learning, comprised of two paragraphs, begins, Merciful father, Who dwells on high, eternal Rock, righteous throughout the generations, Who guides his world with loving kindness and his creatures with mercy, You have selected your people Israel with mercy . . . Within the text are quotes from the Talmud and its commentators, such as the Maharsha and Rabbenu Yonah. It concludes by referring to the merit of the neshamot of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel, and Leah. The second paragraph to be recited learning was composed by the gaon, R. Elijah, av bet din and rosh mesivta in Geridtz. Below this prayer is a list of sources from the Zohar.
