Detailed
Description
Only edition of this collection of responsa on berit milah by Rev. Alexander Tertis. The title page states that Dam Berit is a compilation of the responsa and approbations of rarris and geonim on mezizah be-keli. The title page also describes it in English as a treatise on Metzitzah & Circumcision. A second more detailed title page, entirely in Hebrew, informs that it expresses the opinions of the rabbis, leaders of the generations and contemporary sages from all parts of the world, their sayings, pilpulim, and responsa on the subject of mezizah be-keli with a perforated utensil called טערטיאפעראטום. It also is with the explanation of leading physicians. On the title page is a depiction of the organs and utensils involved in meiuzah be-keli. A table of contents lists seventy-five responsa by leading rabbis, followed by errata. The text is in two columns in square Hebrew letters as well as a small number in English. Included are ten pertinent illustrations.

Mezizah (suction) occurs after peri’ah, removing the foreskin. In mezuzah the mohel traditionally sucked blood from the circumcised penis. This practice, originally based on medical notions of healing the wound more quickly, became subject to severe criticism by the mid-19th century on both hygienic and political grounds. The method now authorized by many rabbinical courts is for mezizah to be performed either by a swab or through a glass tube, preferably containing a small piece of absorbent cotton. The rounded end of the tube is placed firmly over the penis, pressed firmly over the area of the pubis, and suction by the mouth is carried out through the flattened end of the tube or through a rubber attachment. This latter procedure is still controversial, not being accepted by everyone.
