[1], 234, 137ff. quarto 210:125 mm., wide margins, usual age staining, some ff with heavy use stains, final with small loss. A good copy bound in contemporary boards, rubbed.
Two-part comprehensive prayer-book with an abridgement of Siddur Beit Ya'akov of R. Jacob ben Zevi Emden (Yavez) and Derek ha-Hayyim of R. Jacob ben Jacob Moses of Lissa arranged by R. Solomon Zalman Nutter. These are two of the most important commentaries on the Hebrew prayer book. On the title page R. Nutter explains his purpose in printing selections only from the Siddur Beit Ya'akov. That wondrous work, by the gaon Yavez, all-inclusive, is well-known to all. However, Yabez included throughout kabbalistic content, whereas this commentary is peshat, that is, literal explanations. Added on Shabbat prayers is the commentary of the pious R. M. of Zolashiz. In addition, R. Nutter has added bekashot prior to sections of the Yavez and elsewhere, such as the Shabbat meals. The title page is followed by the introductions, in two columns, of the Derekh Hayyim and the author of Nahora ha-Shalem. The text is comprised of prayers for the entire year, accompanied by the thorough commentaries, kavvanot, and appropriate halakhot. The second part of the book is the siddur Derekh Hayyim on festivals with new foliation and the two commentaries. R. Jacob ben Zevi Emden (Yavez, 1697–1776), rabbi, halakhic authority, kabbalist, and anti-Shabbatean polemicist. R. Emden was regarded as one of the outstanding scholars of his generation. German Talmudist; died in Stryj, Galicia, May 25, 1832. He was a great-grandson of R. Ẓebi Ashkenazi and a pupil of Meshullam Eger. R. Jacob was av bet din in Kalisz and afterward in Lissa, and is usually quoted as R. Jacob of Lissa or R. Jacob Lisser. Later he returned to Kalisz and lived there for ten years. Jacob wrote: Ta'alumot Ḥokmah on Ecclesiastes (Lemberg, 1804; Dyhernfurth, 1819); Ẓeror ha-Mor and "Palge Mayim," commentaries on Canticles and Lamentations, under the general title "Imre Yosher" (ib. 1815 and 1819); the character of all three is homiletic-haggadic. His importance, however, rests upon his numerous halakic writings, all of which contain ḥiddushim and bi'urim.
