Description Information
[3], 2-195, 43, 88 ff., 385:234 mm., wide margins, age, use, and damp staining. A very good copy, bound in contemporary full leather boards, rubbed, later spine.
The last edition, second tractate printed in Slavuta. Only three tractates of this edition were completed when the entire press was closed by agents of the Russian Czar. While this tractate carries no approbations the other two in this edition contain approbations from famous and renowned contemporary Rabbis in support of the Shapiros exclusive right and privilege to print the Talmud. Furthermore, the approbations demand that Vilna cease to print the Talmud immediately, as the printing rights continue to belong to Slavuta and Vilna has no right to print at this time.

In 1791 R. Moses Shapira, son of the zaddik R. Phinehas b. Abraham of Korets, founded the printing press Slavuta became known for. Later R. Moses' two sons, Samuel Abba and Phinehas, took over the administration of the press. Three editions of the Babylonian Talmud, an edition of the Bible (with commentaries), the Zohar, and many other religious works, especially hasidic literature, were all produced handsomely and with great care by the press. In 1835 the press was closed down when the owners were arrested for the alleged murder of a worker who had supposedly denounced them for printing books without permission from the censor.
