   After the Russian Revolution, Mykola Shramchenko, a 10-year-old Urkrainian orphan, was adopted by a Jewish family. He learned Hebrew and grew up with a deep respect for Jewish customs. After World War II, in which he was a prisoner in a Nazi labor camp, he came to America as a refugee.
