Detailed
Description
Rare pristine uncut copy of the first Israeli newspaper. Divrei ha-Yamim le-Yisrael is dated 15 Menahem Av “He raises up the poor from the dust מקים מעפר דל (614 = Wednseday, July 28, 1854)” (I Samuel 2:8). Printed in two columns in rabbinic letters, the lead story warns against missionary activity in Jerusalem. The heart of Jerusalem aches, “run down with tears” (Jeremiah 13:17) of the beloved house of Israel, at the sight of “a swelling, [a scab,] or bright spot” (cf. Leviticus 13:2) of the disease of leprosy with the appearance of the sect of Protestants at the gates of Jerusalem. It refers to them as showing their hooves (ref. to the swine) wanting only the good (kosher) animals of Israel. It continues in that vein with several references to the Christian bible. There is an article praising Moses Montefiore, the prince of Jerusalem, with his love and compassion for Zion and Jerusalem, followed by mention of R. Abraham Albert of Paris, a sheliah le-devar mitzvah on behalf of the poor and needy. There is a lengthy piece on the Rothchilds and on the gaonת R. Nathan Adler. Divrei ha-Yamim le-Yisrael is not noted in the Jewish Encyclopedia or in the Encyclopedia Judaica in their articles on newspapers and periodicals nor does it appear in most library catalogs, an exception being the JNUL, which lists this edition as sole printing of this rare newspaper.
