Letter by R. David b. Menahem Mendel Morgenstern, (1809-1873), Admor of Kotsk. R. David, the eldest son, was educated by his illustrious father and assumed the rabbinate upon his passing. He was born in Tomaszov and married the daughter of R. Zvi Hirsch Gruenwald Diskes of Opoczno. He also studied under R. Simhah Bunim of Prysucha.

An erudite scholar he wrote Ahavat David (Warsaw 1899), some of his discourses were printed in Niflaot Hadashot (Piotrokov 1897). Like his father he understood that the value of one's deeds is related to one's effort and not to one's spiritual level. He believed that by the very performance of the mitzvot one could elevate oneself far beyond one's spiritual level. The sincere person should see himself as one who did not achieve anything, making the pretentious person despicable.
