In 1917, under the influence of the political foment which arose in the wake of the Russian Revolution, a militant fortnightly was founded under the name of La Renassencia Judia (The Jewish Renaissance). Its founders, who included Elie Frances and Isaac Angel, were young Zionists who wanted to launch a dynamic Zionist activity and so were determined to combat the opponents of the Jewish National Movement, especially the Socialists and Communists among them. The trend of the paper, which appeared in two languages, Ladino and French, was General Zionist, and supported the policy of Chaim Weizmann. The paper continued to appear until 1921, but renewed publication in 1926 as the organ of the Zionist Federation. Its publication was stopped in 1936 on account of the limitations imposed by the dictatorial regime of General Metaxas. During the last years of its publication it also had a Greek section.
