Detailed
Description
Charming and rare series of stories and poems in booklet form for Jewish children by various authors, among them some of the greatest names in Hebrew literature. The contents vary from issue to issue and also vary in length. The issues are numbered in the upper right hand corner, most title pages having several numbers. The upper left hand corner consistently has the number 100. At the bottom of the page is the price, ranging from one to ten kopeks. The first issue lacks the first four pages. The remaining issues are complete, although the title page of no. nine is lacking. Text is in a single column in vocalized Hebrew. Examples of the contents include (no. 7-8) Max Nordau’s Siah Shoshanim, translated into Hebrew by S. L. Gordon (11 pp.); (no. 16) Micha Josef Berdyczewski’s Ma’asiot ve-Aggddot (6 pp.); (21-22) Saul Tschernichowsky’s poems for children (15 pp.); (no. 26-30) Jacob Babbinowitz’s Ma’aseh be-ben Melekh (34 pp.); (no. 41-50) Judah Zevi (Leib) Levin, Be-Olam ha-Dimion (59 pp.); (no. 51) Noah Pines’ ha-Gibenet ha-Katanah (5 pp.); and (no. 58-60) Samuel Tchernowitz’s Shabbat Ahat be-Gan Eden (15 pp.). There are also pieces by non-Jewish writers, for example, (no. 89) Charles Dickens’ ha-yeled ve-cocovo (8 pp.). This enchanting work is not in the JNUL. The original must have struck a chord in literary memory, for a similar journal for children by the same name was begun in Israel in 1950.
