Detailed
Description
Two works, Har-Zalmon and Ha-Yehudim. Har-Zalmon is the Hebrew translation of the popular German tale, Das Abenteuer der Neujahrsnacht, by Heinrich Zschokke. First published in 1859, this is the first (only) Hebrew translation of this work. Har-Zalmon is novellas, adventures, and fables relating to New Years night. The translator was Isaac (Isisdor) ben Meir Margolis. The German story has retained its popularity and remains in print.

The Swiss Heinrich Zschokke (1771-1848) was a multitalented person. Among his accomplishments are being a prolific writer, statesman and educator. While his stories are not known for their originality, his lucid and enthusiastic style, and modern ideas on politics and religion, made him a popular author. He and his wife, Nanny Nüsperli (1785-1858, had 13 children and 40 grand-children The second work, Ha-Yehudim, is a drama by EphraimYedidah (Gotthold) Lessing (1729–1781). It too was written in German and translated into Hebrew, in this case by Jacob Shimon ha-Kohen. Lessing, a German dramatist, philosopher, and critic was one of the outstanding representatives of the Enlightenment in Germany. His most famous work is Nathan der Weise, inspired by Moses Mendelssohn.
