[Children's] Solomon ha-Kohen Jedidiah
This listing is an independent item not part of any collection
Only edition. pp., 180:204 mm., wide margins, light age staining, several stamps. A very good copy bound in the original printed boards.
Illustrated children’s book on the alef bet by Solomon ben Eliezer ha-Kohen Jedidah. The title page has a frame made up of panels; the right panel is comprised of several joined letter alefs about a pole; the left panel a row of the letter bet with a goat like animal; the bottom panel the letter bet with another animal, and at the top a row of what appears to be intertwined alefs and mems. Within the text each letter has its own page and occasionally two pages. The letter is shown in at least two forms, once as the letter, the second often in a pictorial manner. For example, the letter heh is shown in a straightforward manner and as the beginning of a series of pillars. The letter zayin as a zayin, a knife, and a scythe, the letter yod as a yod and as a hand, and mem as a mem and mayin depicted as kri’at yam suf. At the bottom of the page a series of depictions illustrate the development of the modern letter from its earliest stage to its modern form. Each letter is also accompanied by vocalized text for the child to read.
